Steppe Ecosystem

Ávila

The open space that stretches out before us at this point may seem unremarkable, as the dry-farming fields and pasture surfaces show little evidence of natural richness at first glance. But if we stop and observe in detail, numerous nuances can be appreciated.

These areas, as long as the natural development of agricultural production is respected and phytosanitary products are avoided, harbor one of the most neglected yet most interesting natural communities. This is the steppe ecosystem, where its inhabitants have adapted to the uniqueness of the absence of shelters, developing plumage and coats that blend with the environment, allowing them to go completely unnoticed, as is the case with larks (skylarks, crested larks, etc.), rabbits, voles, and others. However, this discreet appearance, especially in the case of birds, contrasts with their showy behavior when singing. Their powerful songs resonate from a distance, brightening our walk through this area.
