The Four Posts

On the left bank of the Adaja River, you’ll find the San Sebastian shrine (a small Hermitage on the outskirts of the town) which is known by locals as Los cuatro postes It forms part of complex of 4 monolithic Doric columns which are joined together by an architrave bearing the city’s coat of arms and a granite cross in the centre.  The site was built in 1566, with three historians affirming that it was constructed on the grounds of what was a small temple during Roman times Other historical writers believe that the site was built to commemorate the location where Teresa de Jesús’s uncle, Francisco de Cepeda, reunited with the saint and her brother Rodrigo as they fled as martyrs to Moorish territories.   The site provides a unique viewpoint across the walled city, with especially privileged views at sunset, when the day slowly gives way to night and the wall itself is artificially lit.
