Upon reaching Bernuy Salinero, it is essential to leave the marked path to visit a remarkable megalithic monument, the Dolmen of Prado de las Cruces.
This structure is one of the most outstanding Neolithic remains in the central plateau. It consists of a polygonal-shaped funerary chamber, delimited by large granite slabs that formed the walls of the tomb. Originally, the chamber was covered by a large slab serving as a roof to protect the interior. From this chamber extended a narrower and lower access corridor, also made of vertical slabs, which connected the funerary space with the outside. The entire structure was originally covered by a mound of earth and stones, giving the dolmen the appearance of a small artificial hill. This feature served to protect the tomb and make it more visible in the landscape.
Its orientation, aligned with certain astronomical phenomena, adds further interest and demonstrates the surprising knowledge of celestial bodies possessed by the builders of the time.
The Prado de las Cruces is an exceptional testimony of the earliest architectural expressions of prehistoric societies in the province. Its study has allowed us to better understand the funerary beliefs and social organization of these ancient inhabitants.
