Geology takes center stage at this point. These curious granite formations, which have become increasingly present since the beginning of the route, are known as berrocales and are a perfect example of granite relief shaped by long-term geological processes. These rock formations have been sculpted over millions of years by various processes of weathering and erosion, giving rise to spectacular landscapes, with large rounded blocks known as granite boulders.
From a geological point of view, berrocales originate from the weathering of granite, a process in which water and temperature changes slowly break down the rock, favoring the appearance of whimsical shapes such as spheres, stone towers, large slabs, and more. These berrocales are not only a highly scenic tourist attraction but also represent a geological testimony of the Earth’s past, showing how the combined action of geological and climatic factors has shaped a natural environment of great scientific and educational value.
